LONDON SERIES KICK OFF 13 MARCH!

London Series start on the 13th of March: "The Phoenix" Flies in Against Former City Banker Van Melick International Chessboxing returns to The Boston Dome! On 13. March London will witness another exciting fight night with brains! This time top of the bill is a thrilling heavyweight encounter between Sergio "The Phoenix" Leveque from Italy and Dutchman, Hubert Van Melick. Leveque makes his chessboxing debut, marking the final step in his recovery from a horrendous motorbike accident in 2005 when doctors doubted he would ever walk again. Leveque has proved them wrong, regaining fitness and climbing back in the ring three times in Italy during 2009 before rising to the chessboxing challenge. Leveque plays in the Italian A league chess team and is a candidate master level player. Van Melick makes his third chessboxing appearance following two wins against Mexico's Hector Gomez in October 2009 and Welshman Bob Innes in December 2009. Van Melick's chessboxing career kicked off in earnest after losing his job at a top merchant bank during the financial crisis. Now instead of trading shares he trades punches and material on the chessboard, aiming for a shot at the European title currently held by Italy's Gianluca Sirci. On the undercard we have "The Man From Pamplona" Daniel Lizarraga matched against Berliner, Sebastian Bauersfeld and Rob Gillies vs. Johnny Higginson. This is the first of five UK chessboxing events due to take place in London this year, produced by the Great Britain Chess Boxing Organisation in conjunction with The Wolrd Chess Boxing Organisation. Future dates in 2010 will be May 8th, July 3rd, September 11th and December 4th. Make sure you'll get your ticket in time! Chessboxing conquers LA! The WCBO welcomes a new member! At the beginning of this year founder Andrew McGregor opened the first chessboxing club in Los Angeles. Last Saturday, February 27th, they started off on the right foot with a demonstation fight. Andrew "The Fightin' Philanthropist" won by checkmate in the 5th round against Berlin Chess Boxing Club's Boxing trainer David "Dr. King Kong" Pfeifer. Scandal in Siberia!

The Siberian Chess Boxing Organisation fell victim to fraud!
As it has been reported before the World Championship Title fight between Leo Kraft and Nikolay Sazhin on 28 November 2023 in Krasnoyarsk had been followed by at least 2000 spectators.
In the aftermath of the event the organizers of the venue "Ivan Yarygin Palace of Sports" claimed that only 57 tickets had been sold as well as they weren't able to return the remaining tickets. The earnings from the 57 sold tickets were retained for "superintendent service".
The SCBO pressed charges, untill now without any succes.
The WCBO officially supports the SCBO and generally condemns such conduct.

SIBERIAN SENSATION: YOUNGEST CHESSBOXING CHAMPION EVER!

Leo "Granit" Kraft is the youngest World Champion in Chessboxing history! On November 28 at the Ivan Yarygin Palace of Sport in Krasnoyarsk, Siberia a crowd of 2000 witnessed a fiercly fought battle in the light heavyweight division, between the 2 most talented chessboxers the world has ever seen: the reigning world champion Nikolay "The Chairman" Sazhin and the young Leo "Granit" Kraft. On paper experts knew this would be the highest quality fight ever organised by the World Chess Boxing Organisation in cooperation with the Siberian Chess Boxing Organisation. Nikolay "The Chairman" Sazhin, a 21 year old math student from Krasnoyarsk, has an amateur boxing record encompassing 95 bouts with 85 victories and his chess Elo rating is 2005. Leo Kraft, only 17 years old, comes originally from Gomel in Belarus but has been adopted by the German Chess Boxing Organisation (GCBO). He has an impressive record of 50 amateur boxing bouts and 45 wins. He recently placed 5th at the European junior boxing championships in Bulgaria and will compete in the World junior championships next year. His chess Elo Rating is 1997. Kraft, playing with the white pieces, aimed for the Spanish opening but Sazhin forced him into the Greenfield defense within the 1st chess round. In the second round Leo Kraft started fiercly and overwhelmed Sazhin with a Mike Tyson style of boxing. In the 3rd round Kraft castled long, which was the signal for both players to go for a direct kings attack. Sazhin was quicker and Kraft was forced to defend his king. The Chairman also got the upperhand in boxing, demonstrating his world champion qualities. In the 5th and 7th (both chess) rounds Sazhin attempted checkmate on the board but this used too much time of his chessclock. Leo Kraft skillfully defended his king. In the 6th round Kraft once again put Sazhin under pressure with fierce combinations of hooks and uppercuts. In the 8th round with only one minute left on the chess timer, Sazhin knew he had to knockout his younger opponent. Backed by the excited local crowd he attacked his younger opponent with all he had, but after 3 minutes Kraft was still standing. The bell rang and Nikolay Sazhin laid down his own king and surrendered. Leo Kraft is the new World Champion in the light heavyweight division! After the fight, Vladimir Makarov, head of the SCBO, pointed out that Sazhin had an knee injury just three days before the fight which definitely influenced his ability. After Iepe Rubingh, president of the WCBO confirmed this, both parties agreed on a rematch in 2010.

World Championship fight in Siberia with most talented fighters ever! On 28th of November, 2009 the Siberian Chess Boxing Organization (SCBO) presents Nikolay 'The Chairman' Sazhin (Russia) versus Leo 'Granit' Kraft (Germany) in a battle for the light-heavyweight world title. The event in Krasnoyarsk, the incumbent world champion's native city, is the first chessboxing World Championship ever held on Russian soil. The show is presented in association with the World Chess Boxing Organisation. Nikolay Sazhin is a 5th-year student at the Institute of Space and Information Technology of the Siberian Federal University. His amateur boxing record encompasses 95 bouts with 85 victories. His Chess Elo rating is 2005. Leo Kraft, the youngest chessboxer ever to challenge for a world title, comes originally from Gomel in Belarus, but has been adopted by the newly founded German Chess Boxing Organisation (GCBO). In October the London ChessBoxing again organised a great fight night featuring Andy 'The Rock' Costello and Gianluca 'Il Dottore' Sirci competing in the first European heavyweight championship final. The clash of the old heavy weight rivals had been awaited eagerly as Costello had lost against Sirci in Berlin 2008 due to a controversial disqualification. So Costello had a bone to pick with Sirci and it seemed promising for Costello with a home field advantage. During the boxing rounds The Rock could throw more punches but Il Dottore's chess game was the difference between the two. He had been training hard to improve his chess skills which paid off in the ninth round making him the first European heavyweight champion in chessboxing history! The Undercard fight was fought by Dutch Hubert van Melick against Hector Gomez. It was a thrilling battle, where both chessboxers fought as true lions. Van Melick eventually won in the ninth round while Gomez exceeded the chess time limit.

EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP LONDON

A clash of heavyweights in London including a European Championship Here we go again, another thrilling chessboxing night in London on Friday Oct 9th 2009 with a dazzling rematch! Andy 'The Rock' Costello will fight against Gianluca 'Il Dottore' Sirci in the heavyweight division. After the competitive bout in Berlin 2008 (watch here) against the Italian 'Dottore' Sirci -in real life scientist- 'The Rock' in the meantime had been quite busy. He faced Wolfram von Stauffenberg, against whom he controversially lost in Cologne and won in a rematch in London. This time Costello or Sirci can gain the European championship title. Evidently this match is awaited with eagerness and accompanied with a massive publicity drive, so make sure you'll get your ticket in time. Plus: Hubert Van Melick faces Hector Gomez in the heavyweight divison. More information here. Godfather of chessboxing meets father of chessboxing Iepe Rubingh In 1992, Enki Bilal - renowned creator of comics - had published a piece with the title 'Cold equator' in which for the first time chessboxing in a very elementary variation was displayed, providing the inspiration for Iepe Rubingh to create a new sport. Recently the two men met to explore their first encounter. Enki Bilal visited the chessboxing headquarter and the camp where he and Iepe had a game of chess. Later he followed a training unit and a sparring match in the CBCB. His initial scepticism turned into approval after he had experienced what the sport chessboxing is and how it is trained and performed. M. Bilal was accompanied by a team of the french broadcasting company 'Canal+'. Within the program 'A Berlin en Berlin' Enki Bilals visit will be aired on Nov 9. Chessboxing goes south! Spanish premiere in Salamanca In front of 2000 spectators on one of Salamanca's most splendid spots 'Plaza Mayor', the Spanish opening couldn't have been more impressive. Go Spain, we need you for chessboxing!

London calling - the results

In April 2009 the Great Britain Chess Boxing Organisation again presented four fascinating bouts featuring GBCBO founder Tim Woolgar followed by a thrilled audience.
In the headline bout chessboxing veteran Sascha Wandkowski fought against Konrad Rikardson. Opinion was that this was the greatest chessboxing bout held in London to date which Konrad Rikardson could finally win in the 11. round.
In the world's first ever Amateur chessboxing bout Tim Woolgar faced Matt 'Crazy Arms' Read who could win.
Chessboxing talent Sebastian Bauersfeld with 4 wins and no losses fought against debutant Nick Cornish in the middleweight division. Cornish could keep up in parts but had to resign in the 3. round.
The heavyweight fight featured James 'The Slice' Taylor and Bob 'The Red Kite' Innes. Taylor won at the end of round 4 by a TKO.

THE SIBERIAN RESULTS - LONDON COMING UP

Siberia is unfreezing - the Krasnoyarsk results. Over 500 spectators followed the chessboxing premiere in Krasnoyarsk on 21 February, organised by the newly founded Siberian Chess Boxing Organisation (SCBO) in association with the WCBO. In the heavyweight division Viktor Tarasov faced Sergeij Ychenko. In a highly competitive fight Ychenko won in round 10 after Tarasov's chess time had elapsed. Evgenij Lykhta in the middleweight division displayed the first TKO in Russian chessboxing history against Vitali Degtjarew who could not benefit from his advantage in chess. He got knocked out in round 4. In the lightweight division Artyr Vardyanyan could not take part due to illness. Instead Galiakhmetov fought against Egor Dolgatchev. The former gave up in round 7 (chess round). The Russian television broadcasted parts of the event. It can be seen here. First documentary on chessboxing! Mike Richardson British producer and director shot a documentary on chessboxing featuring Iepe Rubingh, Tim Woolgar, Andy 'The Rock' Costello and other usual suspects.

Sibirien taut im Schachboxen auf: die Ergebnisse von Krasnojarsk: Über 500 Zuschauer verfolgten am 21. 2. die Schachboxpremi- ere in Krasnojarsk, die von der neu gegründeten Siberian Chess Boxing Organisation (SCBO) in Zusammenarbeit mit dem WCBO präsentiert wurde. Im Schwergewicht standen sich Viktor Tarasow und Sergej Ischenko gegenüber. In einem hart umkämpften Match konnte Ischenko in der 10. Runde den Kampf für sich entscheiden, nachdem Tarasows Zeit abgelaufen war. Evgenij Lykhta hatte Vitali Degtjarew im Mittelgewicht bereits mehrmals auf die Bretter geschickt. In der 4. Runde kam es dann durch Lykhta zum ersten technischen KO in der noch jungen russischen Schachboxgeschichte. Degtjarew konnte seine Überlegenheit im Schach nicht mehr ausspielen. Im Leichtgewicht fiel Artur Vardanian krankheitsbedingt aus und wurde von Galiakmetow vertreten. Im Kampf gegen Egor Dolgatchew musste er in der 7. Runde im Schach aufgeben. Teile der Kämpfe wurden vom russischen Fernsehen übertragen und können hier angesehen werden. Erste Doku über Schachboxen! Der britische Produzent und Regisseur Mike Richardson hat einen Dokumentarfilm über Schachboxen gedreht. Darin: Gründer Iepe Rubingh, Tim Woolgar (GBCBO), Andy 'The Rock' Costello und weitere grosse Namen.

Chessboxing Premiere in Krasnoyarsk on 21 February 2009! When Nikolay Sazhin won the world championship in the light heavyweight division in July 2008 it was obvious that Russia would play an important role in chessboxing. Sazhin returned with the belt and the vision to spread this sport in Siberia. As a consequence the champion, Roman Lavrenov and Vladimir Makarov founded the Siberian Chess Boxing Organisation (SCBO). Now the SCBO in association with the WCBO proudly present: Chessboxing goes Russia - first tournament in Krasnoyarsk on 21 February! Six promising chess and boxing talents from Krasnoyarsk, Tomsk and the Republic of Khakassia will perform in the course of the Siberian championship in 3 weight classes: Viktor Tarasov vs Sergeij Ychenko (heavyweight), Vitali Degtyarev vs Evgeniy Lykhta (middleweight) and Egor Dolgatchev vs Artyr Vardyanyan (lightweight). Wie gut Schachboxen und Russland zusammenpassen, bewies Nikolay Sazhin im Juli 2008 mit dem Gewinn des Weltmeister- schaftstitels im Halbschwergewicht. Mit dem Gürtel des Champions und der Vision von einem schachboxenden Russland kehrte er nach Krasnojarsk zurück. Stauffenberg seine erwartete Überlegenheit im Boxen gegen den ständig klammernden Costello schwer umsetzen. Die 3. Schachrunde sah klar v. Stauffenberg im Nachteil, der auf der Uhr schon schwer zurücklag und sich auch mit Springer d7 passiv verteidigte. Mit einer Bauernattacke von Costello am Königsflügel ging der Kampf in die 4. Boxrunde, in der Costello wegen Klammerns erst einen Punktabzug erhielt um dann nach einem vermeintlichen Nackenschlag, disqualifiziert zu werden. Inwieweit die Entscheidung des Ringrichters korrekt war, wird die Videoanalyse des Materials in den nächsten Tagen ergeben. Int. Deutsche Meisterschaft: Klarer Sieg für Berlin! Im Kampf um die Int. Deutsche Meisterschaft im Mittelgewicht trafen Jan Mielke und Sebastian Bauersfeld aufeinander. Bauersfeld eröffnete mit Weiß und der Birderöffnung den Kampf am Schachbrett, doch Mielke zeigte sich gut präpariert und kam besser aus der Eröffnung heraus. Die erste Boxrunde sah jedoch Bauersfeld leicht im Vorteil. Der Kampf gestaltete sich offen und spannend bis zur 5. Runde, in der Mielke seinen Springer auf e2 verlor. Bauersfeld agierte daraufhin deutlich selbstbewusster und vergrößerte seinen Vorteil stetig. Mielke konnte seine letzten Chancen nur noch im Boxen suchen, doch der Knockout kam nicht. In der 9. Runde streckte Mielke dann kurz vor dem Matt die Waffen.

On 6 September in Cologne the elimination contest in the light heavyweight division saw David 'Double D' Depto and the Swedish newcomer Konrad Rikardson. Depto opened with the white pieces, moving pawn d2 to d4, but Rikardson being a skilled chess player got a better position at the end of the first round. The boxing round started off boldly. Initially Rikardson was yet equal in strength but two hard punches on his head made a significant impact on Rikardson, thereupon falling to the floor. Depto continued vigorously pressuring his opponent. After two further knockdowns the referee stopped the contest. Hence David Depto will challenge Nikolay Sazhin in the upcoming fight for the world championship title in the light heavyweight division! Heavyweight elimination contest ends with controversial disqualification of Costello! Costello opened with a queen's gambit, which was declined by v. Stauffenberg. Costello attacked on the king's side, but v. Stauffenberg defended himself well in the first round. In the following boxing round v. Stauffenberg couldn't use his expected advantage because of the clinching Costello. The following chess round ended at a disadvantage for v. Stauffenberg, his time on the chess timer was running out. Costello continued his attack with his pawns on the king's side and in the next boxing round Costello got a point deduction due to continuous clinching. After an alleged punch on the back of the head the referee decided to disqualify Costello. The WCBO is currently analyzing the footage of the fight in order to see if this decision was correct. International German Championship - Clash of the cities - Berlin wins! In the int. German championship Jan Mielke met Sebastian Bauersfeld. Bauersfeld opened with the bird opening but Mielke was well prepared and the first round ended with an advantage for Mielke. Instead the boxing round ended with an advantage for Bauersfeld. The following rounds displayed an open and pulsating fight. In round 5 Mielke lost his knight on e2, which increased Bauersfeld's self-confidence. Mielke tried to take advantage of his last chance with a knockout but he couldn't make it. In round 9 Mielke capitulated while facing checkmate.

Die Herausforderer des amtierenden Weltmeisters im Halbschwergewicht Nikolay Sazhin sind eingetroffen: David 'Double D' Depto aus San Francisco wartet bereits in Köln auf seinen Gegner Konrad Rikardson, der Stellung im Berliner Eastpak Built to Resist Camp bezogen hat. David 'Double D' Depto, das heißt: 85 kg Intelligenz, bei einem IQ von 140 und einem ELO-Rating von 1850. Depto ist studierter Ökonom und arbeitet als Manager in einem großen Pharma- konzern. Hat er die richtige Medizin gegen den 27jährigen Schweden Konrad Rikardson, seines Zeichens Cambridge- absolvent in Nahostwissenschaften? Rikardson boxt seit 7 Jahren und kann ein ELO-Rating von 1975 aufweisen. Fakt ist: Auf den Sieger wartet am 4. Oktober in Hamburg der amtierende Weltmeister Nikolay Sazhin! Duell der Schachboxmetropolen - Köln vs. Berlin. Kölns Lokalmatador Jan Mielke kämpft gegen den Berliner Sebastian Bauersfeld im Turnier um die Internationale Deutsche Meisterschaft im Mittelgewicht. Nachdem Mielke 2007 gegen Bauersfeld eine Niederlage einstecken musste, bekommt der dynamische Unternehmensberater aus Köln-Vogelsang in seiner Heimatstadt die Gelegenheit zurückzuschlagen. Der 35jährige wiegt 70 Kilo und hat ein ELO-Rating von 1600. Sebastian Bauersfeld ist amtierender Berliner Meister. Im Chess Boxing Club Berlin wird er als das Vereinstalent gehandelt. Der 23jährige wiegt 74 Kilo und hat ein ELO-Rating von 1760. Das wird nicht leicht: EM Qualifikation im Schwergewicht. In der Schwergewichtsqualifikation geben sich Wolfram von Stauffenberg und Andrew 'The Rock' Costello die Ehre. Wolfram von Stauffenberg ist 31 Jahre alt, wiegt 100 Kilo und hat 76 Amateurboxkämpfe bestritten. Er hat ein ELO-Rating von 1860 und war im Boxen 1997 Landesmeister von Sachsen-Anhalt, 2000 Vize-Landesmeister und erkämpfte sich 2004 den Brandenburg Pokal. Andrew 'The Rock' Costello ist nicht nur ein Meister im Ringen, Muay Thai, Kickboxen und Freefight, sondern galt in seiner Kindheit auch als Schach-Wunderkind und hat seit der Eröffnung der Great Britain Chess Boxing Organisation in London das Spiel der Könige wiederentdeckt. Er ist 1,88m groß, wiegt 99 Kilo und hat ein ELO-Rating von 2010. Er kann in Köln mit einem Sieg eine Revanche gegen Gianluca Sirci am 4. Oktober in Hamburg herausschlagen. Both challengers of Nikolay Sazhin the light heavyweight world champion have arrived: in Cologne David 'Double D' Depto from San Francisco eagerly awaits his opponent Konrad Rikardson, having just settled down at the Eastpak Built to Resist Camp in Berlin. David 'Double D' Depto, that means: 85 kg of brainpower with an IQ of 140 and an ELO-Rating of 1850. Depto works as economist for a well-known pharmaceutical company. Will Depto find an adequate treatment for 27-year-old Rikardson, a Cambridge Middle Eastern Studies graduate? He has been boxing for 7 years and has an ELO-Rating of 1975. The winner faces Nikolay Sazhin on 4 October in Hamburg! International German Championship featuring a duel of cities - Cologne vs. Berlin. Cologne's local hero Jan Mielke battles against Berlin's upcoming Sebastian Bauersfeld in the middleweight division. After been defeated by Bauersfeld in 2007, Mielke now has the opportunity to fight back on native soil. Mielke is 35 years old, weights 70 kg has an ELO-Rating of 1600. Sebastian Bauersfeld is tipped as the new shooting star of the Chess Boxing Club Berlin. He is 23 years old, weights 74 kg and has an ELO-Rating of 1760. Light at the end of the tunnel: Heavyweight European Championship Elimination Contest. Wolfram von Stauffenberg and Andrew 'The Rock' Costello are on the parade for the heavyweight division. 31-year-old Wolfram von Stauffenberg weights 100 kg and has 76 amateur boxing bouts behind him. His ELO-Rating is 1860. Andrew 'The Rock' Costello does not only look back on past encounters in various disciplines including wrestling, Muay Thai, kickboxing and free fighting but was also considered a chess prodigy in his younger days. With the inauguration of the London Chess Boxing Club earlier this year he rediscovered the 'game of the kings'. He is 1,88m tall, weights 95kg and has an ELO-Rating of 2010. Herausforderer gesucht! Amerikas Schachbox-Hoffnung Nr. 1 David 'Double D' Depto gegen Konrad Rikardson. Im Gloria in Köln geht die Deutschland Tour im Schachboxen weiter. Am 6. September entscheidet sich, welcher Kämpfer der zukünftige Herausforderer für Nikolai Sazhin, den frischge- backenen Weltmeister im Halbschwergewicht, sein wird. Außerdem: die Kämpfe um die Internationale Deutsche Meisterschaft im Mittelgewicht und die Europameisterschafts- qualifikation im Schwergewicht! Durchschlagen bis zum Weltmeister! Höhepunkt des Abends wird der WM-Ausscheidungskampf im Halbschwergewicht zwischen US - Schachboxer David 'Double D' Depto und dem schwedischen Supertalent Konrad Rikardson. Der 30-jährige David 'Double D' Depto, lebt in San Francisco, bringt 85 Kilo auf die Waage und hat bisher 30 Boxkämpfe bestritten. Sein ELO Rating beträgt 1850. 2007 verlor er in einem dramatischen Kampf gegen 'Anti-Terror' Frank Stoldt das Duell um die Weltmeisterschaft im Halbschwergewicht. Nun tritt er erneut an, um den Titel bald nach Amerika zu holen. Nicht minder spannend wird der Kampf im Schwergewicht. Challengers wanted! David 'Double D' Depto vs. Konrad Rikardson. On 6 September 2023 the German Chessboxing Tournament 2008 continues at Gloria in Cologne. The top of the bill features a straight fight for the right to face the young Russian, Nikolay Sazhin, the light heavyweight world titleholder. The tournament also features an International German Championship bout in the middleweight division and a European Championship elimination contest in the heavyweight division. Fight for your right to fight. The evening's climax between the exceptionally gifted American David 'Double D' Depto and Konrad Rikardson from Sweden is a mouthwatering clash. San Francisco based Depto is 30 years old, weighs 85 kilos and has 30 boxing bouts behind him. His ELO-rating is 1850. In 2007 Depto lost a dramatic fight against 'Anti-Terror' Frank Stoldt for the world title who in turn lost out to Nikolay Sazhin in July 2008. Now Depto is aiming for second chance to bring the coveted belt to the US. Also awaited with baited breath is the European Championship elimination contest in which Andrew 'The Rock' Costello faces Wolfram von Stauffenberg. The winner will presumably fight against Gianluca 'Il Dottore' Sirci in October. Will 'The Rock' seize the chance to take revenge on Sirci for the defeat in Berlin on 5 July?
